Earlier *brynne, from Proto-Germanic *brunjǭ. Cognate with Old High German brunja (German Brünne), Old Norse brynja (Swedish brynja), Gothic 𐌱𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌾𐍉 (brunjō). Compare Middle English brinie, Scots byrnie, from the Old Norse.
