From cờ (board game with pieces or tokens) +‎ vua (monarch), ultimately a calque of Persian شاه (šâh, king) (> شاهمات (šâh-mât, checkmate)), through a European source like French échec (check), échecs (chess). Compare cờ tướng (xiangqi, literally general board game).
