First attested in 1753; borrowed from Latin centēsimātus, perfect passive participle of the Latin centēsimō (see -ate (verb-forming suffix)), from centēsimus (hundredth) + (verb-forming suffix); compare tertiate, quintate, sextate, septimate, decimate, and duodecimate.
