From late Old Indo-Aryan *śakana- ~ *chakana-, a colloquial formation from Sanskrit शकन् (śakán), the oblique base of शकृत् (śákṛt, dung); see there for further etymology. Cognate with Prakrit 𑀙𑀕𑀡 (chagaṇa).
