Coined by Tadhg Ó Neachtain (c. 1670 – c. 1752) based on a misreading of cighim (itself a rare and now obsolete alternative spelling of cím (“I see”)) as cigim, expanded by the suffix -ire. Began to see actual use in Irish at the beginning of the 20th century.
