Unknown. Probably a derivative of the expressive root coc (cf. cucă (“peak, top”), cucuia (“rise, climb”)). Less likely etymologies proposed include a link with cocoș, or a derivative of Latin cucutium, or a Vulgar Latin root *concaptiāre.
