Inherited from Vulgar Latin cottizāre or cottidiāre (compare Aromanian cutedz, cutidzari, Venetian scotezàr, Istriot cutisà, Aquileian scuttia, compare also Albanian kuxoj), from Ancient Greek κοττίζω (kottízō, to play craps, shoot dice).
