Borrowed from Ukrainian чека́н (čekán), from Old East Slavic чеканъ (čekanŭ), from Proto-Slavic *čekanъ, from a Turkic language. Corresponds with many other cognates, including Romanian ciocan, Bulgarian чук (čuk), чукан (čukan), Serbo-Croatian čekić, Albanian çekan, Hungarian csákány.
