Etymology

edit

From Old High German *diuf, northern variant of tiuf, from Proto-Germanic *deupaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewb-. The expected masculine form is *déifen, but the fricative was voiced, possibly by analogy with the homophone Déif (thief) and/or the rhyming adjectives dréif (turbid), léif (dear).
