  • (unetymological spelling) giông

Etymology edit

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “In the transcription system used by Ferlus, the Mày form would be kətoːŋ¹ and the Proto-Vietic form would be *k-toːŋ.”

Cognate with Chut [Mày] katoŋ¹ (Babaev & Samarina, 2018).

The spelling giông appears to arise from hypercorrection and is often attributed to Vũ Trọng Phụng's Giông Tố (1936), but there are plenty of examples of giông that predate the novel; for example, it is attested in the second volume of Nam Kỳ phong tục nhơn vật diễn ca (1909).
