Inherited from Vulgar Latin *disfacere, present active infinitive of *disfaciō, from Latin dis- + faciō (do, make) or from des- +‎ face. Compare Aromanian disfac, disfatsiri, Catalan desfer, French défaire, Italian disfare, Portuguese desfazer, Spanish deshacer.
