From Ancient Greek δωδεκαδάκτυλον (dōdekadáktulon), from δώδεκα (dṓdeka, twelve) + δάκτυλος (dáktulos, finger) “twelve-fingers[-long thing]”; compare English duodenum and German Zwölffingerdarm; cognate with Greek δωδεκαδάκτυλο (dodekadáktylo) and Italian dodecadattilo.
