From Old Danish dræpæ, from Old Norse drepa, from Proto-Germanic *drepaną (“to hit, strike”). Compare Norwegian Bokmål drepe and Swedish dräpa. Also cognate with German treffen (“to meet, hit”), whence Danish træffe.
