Old Saxon

edit

Etymology

edit

From Proto-West Germanic *dreugan, from Proto-Germanic *dreuganą. Cognate with Gothic 𐌳𐍂𐌹𐌿𐌲𐌰𐌽 (driugan, do military service), Old English drēogan and Old Norse drýgja (perform, practise).

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /ˈdriɛ̯ɣɑn/
  • Possibly IPA(key): /ˈdriɔ̯ɣɑn/, but the spelling with ⟨io⟩ is comparably rare, so that it is not certain whether it might merely be a spelling convention copied from Old Dutch and Old High German or indeed an older stage of the language.

Verb

edit

driogan

  1. to suffer, undergo, endure
