From Ottoman Turkish اكشی ‎(ekşi, an acid; sour substance, sour, acidic), derived from Proto-Turkic *ek-ĺči- ‎(to be sour). See ekşimek.

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] ‎(ekşig, sour), Chagatai [script needed] ‎(ekşi, sour), Chuvash йӗксӳ ‎(jĕksü, bitterness).
