Variant of anghraifft, alteration of Middle Welsh agreith, from Proto-Brythonic *aŋkrėθ, perhaps from Vulgar Latin *increptus, from Latin increpitus, past participle of increpō (to upbraid); prefix in- (in, against) + crepō (to talk noisily).
