Etymology edit

From Middle Dutch anclau. There are two possible origins put forward:

  • A folk etymological interpretation of Proto-Germanic *ankulaz (ankle, hip), which descended separately into Dutch as enkel (ankle).
  • Equivalent to a compound of enkel (ankle) +‎ klauw (claw), where the first part lost its suffix -kel through haplology.

Cognate with Old English anclēow.

  • Hyphenation: en‧klauw
