From the Ancient Greek ἐπιμόρῐος (epimórios, containing a whole + a fraction with 1 for its numerator (1+¹⁄ₓ)”, “superparticular), from ἐπί (epí, upon”, “over”, “above) + μόριον (mórion, a fraction with 1 for its numerator) + -ιος (-ios, suffix forming adjectives); for the ending, see the English -ic.
