From English standard, from Middle English, from the Old French estandart (“gathering place, battle flag”), from Old Frankish *standhard (literally “stand firm, stand hard”), equivalent to stand + -ard. Alternative etymology derives the second element from Old Frankish *ord (“point, spot, place”).
