Possibly Italian fango from borrowed from Vulgar Latin *fangus (mud).[1] Jokl claims a borrowing from Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌲𐌲𐍃 (waggs, paradise, *meadow), from Proto-Germanic *wangaz (field, meadow).[1]
