From Old English forþgang (a going forth, progress), from Proto-Germanic *furþagangaz (a going forth, advancement). Cognate with Old Frisian forthgang, forthgong (progress), Middle Low German vōrtganc (progress), Middle High German vortganc (progress). By surface analysis, forth +‎ gang; see these for more.
