From Middle English forthward, forthwardes, from Old English forþweard (forward, tending forward, continual), from Proto-Germanic *furþą (forth-), *warþaz (turned), equivalent to forth- +‎ -ward. Cognate with Old Saxon forþwerd, forþwerdes, forþwardes (forthward).
