free +‎ post

Noun edit

freepost (uncountable)

  1. (chiefly UK) A postal service allowing a person to send mail without affixing postage, the recipient paying when collecting the mail.
    • 2013, Robin Flowerdew, David M. Martin, Methods in Human Geography:
There are greater constraints on the complexity and length of the questionnaire: if it is not short, simple and easy to complete the respondent is likely to bin it. A stamped addressed envelope or a freepost number can be used to facilitate return.
    • 2013, Nigel Bradley, Marketing Research: Tools and Techniques:
There is a belief that real postage stamps lead to a greater response. This seems to be because respondents see the stamp as money and are less likely to throw it away; in comparison, a freepost or pre-paid envelope is worthless.
  2. (UK) A postal service allowing an electoral candidate, political party or government department to send mail wholly paid for by Royal Mail (as the statutory universal postal service provider).
    • 2019, Electoral Commission, European Parliamentary elections (Great Britain):
      Freepost on one election communication
