Likely an old compound of Garifuna gayu (chicken, fowl) and an obsolete word meaning “egg”. Compare also Kalinago gą́ie (chicken's egg), which Taylor (1951) analyzes as a compound of gáiu (chicken, fowl, from Spanish gallo) +‎ ę́u (egg, having possessive form ).
