Etymology

From Arabic غَوَازٍ (ḡawāzin), the plural of غَازِيَة (ḡāziya), the feminine of غَازٍ (ḡāzin, ghazi, raider, aggressor, conqueror). The dancers were so called because they were said to "conquer" the hearts of their audience.
