From Middle Dutch heerse, from Proto-Germanic *hirsijô, potentially derived in turn from an unknown substrate language or, alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *ker- (feed, nourish).

Cognate with Limburgish hirs, Old Saxon hirsi, Plautdietsch Hieezh, Old High German hirsi (German Hirse), Alemannic German Hirse.
