Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كیمك (gimek, geymek), from Proto-Turkic *ked- (to put on).[1]

Cognate with Azerbaijani geymək, Bashkir кейеү (keyew), Crimean Tatar kiymek, Kazakh кию (kiü), Kyrgyz кийүү (kiyüü), Kumyk гиймек (giymek), Old Turkic 𐰚𐰓 (kd²), Shor кезерге, Southern Altai кийер (kiyer), Tatar кию (kiyu), Tuvan кедер (keder), Uzbek kiymoq, Uyghur كىيمەك (kiymek), Yakut кэтии (ketii) etc.
