  1. to hold (something)

  2. (reflexive) to hold on (for support)
    Håll i er! Nu blir det åka av!

  3. (reflexive, figurative) to brace oneself (for something shocking or the like)

Usage notes edit

A plain hålla also works in (sense 1), but hålla i is often more idiomatic, placing a bit more emphasis on the grip. "Han höll en yxa i handen" is also idiomatic.
