edit

From hembra (female) +‎ -ismo, by analogy with machismo (male chauvinism), from macho (male).

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /emˈbɾismo/ [ẽmˈbɾiz.mo]
  • Rhymes: -ismo
  • Syllabification: hem‧bris‧mo

Noun

edit

hembrismo m (plural hembrismos)

  1. female chauvinism; misandry; sexism (a belief in the innate superiority of women over men)
    Synonyms: (formal) misandria, (offensive) feminazismo
    Antonym: machismo

Usage notes

edit
  • hembrismo is usually employed by antifeminists to describe feminism, in a not offensive manner, unlike its synonym feminazismo. Some people who consider themselves feminists also use it to express their disagreement with certain female chauvinist ideas or behaviours which some people have, and are usually claimed to be part of feminism.
