First attested in 1894. From the German Hidradenitis (1865; also the etymologically more consistent Hidrotadenitis, 1893), ultimately representing the Ancient Greek roots ἱδρώς (hidrṓs, sweat, stem: ἱδρῶτ-, hidrōt-) + ἀδήν (adḗn, gland, stem: ἀδεν-, aden-) + -ῖτις (-îtis, [inflammatory] disease).
