Derived from an unattested verb *hlacerian, from Proto-West Germanic *hlakarōn (to make fun of), an iterative form of Proto-West Germanic *hlakōn, *hlakkōn (to laugh), from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną (to laugh). Cognate with Old Frisian hlakkia, hlakia (to laugh), Old Norse hlakka (to shout for joy, squeal, scream, screech).
