From Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐎹 (hinduya), gentilic of Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hinduš), itself from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, the Indus River) or Proto-Iranian *sindʰu. Also see hnd (hind).
