From hndwk' (Hindūg, an Indian), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (h-i-du-u-š /⁠hinduš⁠/), from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, the Indus River) or Proto-Iranian *sindʰu. Also see hnd (hind).
