Etymology edit

Originally Californian surfer slang from the 1960s.[1] Perhaps from the greeting Ho! Dad,[2] though no evidence for this derivation is known. The suggestion that it derives from South American Spanish jodido (fucked, difficult, annoying) similarly lacks evidence; also the vowel change from -did to -dad is unexplained.

Noun edit

hodad (plural hodads)

  1. (surfing, slang, derogatory) Someone who comes to the beach and has a surfboard, but never surfs, or that surfs poorly and annoys the local seasoned surfers.
