Etymology edit

Probably from Middle Chinese.[1] The second syllable corresponds to (MC tsyijX, “finger”), while the first is "obscure". Possibilities include:

  • (MC 'aep|kaep, “signature”)
  • (MC kajH|hap|kap, “to stamp”) < Old Chinese (OC *kaːbs, *kaːb, *ɡaːb)
  • (MC hop|kop, “to close; to fit tightly; to agree with”)
