Learned borrowing from Ecclesiastical Latin catēchismus, from Ancient Greek *κατηχισμός (*katēkhismós, katēkhismos), from κατηχίζω (katēkhízō, to catechize), a later extended form of κατηχέω (katēkhéō, to catechize, instruct, teach by word of mouth), from κατά (katá, down) + ἠχέω (ēkhéō, to sound, to resound).
