editFrom Old Norse kjarf, kerfi (“bundle”). Compare with Middle High German krēbe (“basket”), and Sanskrit ग्रप्स (grapsa, “bundle”).[1] Also perhaps akin to Old Saxon crybb (and ergo to English crib).[2]
