Etymology

From Middle High German kraen, from Old High German krāen, from Proto-West Germanic *krāan (to crow, shout). Cognate with German krähen. In Cimbrian, an extra -an is added to verbs when the infinitive would only have one syllable, e.g. zèinan (to be) (compare German sein).

  1. (Sette Comuni, of roosters) to crow
    Dar haano khréent un de hénna khallet.
    The rooster crows and the hen cackles.
