Etymology

From Proto-Tai *qrwɤjꟲ (“mountain stream”). Cognate with Lao ຫ້ວຍ (wany), Lü ᦠᦽᧉ (ḣoy²), Shan ႁူၺ်ႈ (hōi), Ahom 𑜍𑜤𑜐𑜫 (ruñ), Saek รี̂, Zuojiang Zhuang khui [Ningming] or hui [Longzhou], Thai ห้วย (hûai).
