editShortening of dialectal kalastorom (“monastery”), ultimately from Medieval Latin claustrum, the intermediate form *kalastor was influenced by monostor (“monastery”). Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. Cognate with English cloister.
