Etymology

edit

According to Derksen, probably from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂wp- (heap, mound), for which see kaũpas (heap) for more. Another theory by Kortlandt derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p- (to seize, grab), for which he compares Ancient Greek κώπη (kṓpē, handle (of an oar, etc.)).[1]
