From Middle Welsh lles, from Old Welsh les, suggested by Stokes to be from Proto-Celtic *lesso-, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁- (“to fill”), similar to Proto-Slavic *plodъ (“fruit”).[1][2] Cognate with Irish leas.
