mastigopod (plural mastigopods)

  1. (zoology, obsolete) A member of the Mastigopoda (protozoans which possess cilia or flagella).
    • 1888, Thomas Henry Huxley, A Manual of the Anatomy of Invertebrated Animals, page 77:
      After swimming about for a while, these mastigopods draw in their flagella, and become creeping myxopods.
