Possibly a compound formation from mbi +‎ thej (to turn, twist), a variant of thyej . Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *mer (to plait, bind; rope). Compare Old High German bardi (shield), Italian barda (horse harness), Greek βροχός (vrochós, cord).
