From Proto-Albanian * ̊pītśi-, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₃-i- ‎(to drink). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *ambi-wītja. Compare Sanskrit व्यथते ‎(vyáthate, to sway, to rock) and Gothic 𐍅𐌹𐌸𐍉𐌽 ‎(wiþōn, to pour).
