Etymology edit

The result of conscious word formation from the archaic menekedik (to flee) +‎ -ül, itself from the obsolete menik (to escape) + -ekedik (reflexive suffix). Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.[1]
