From Middle French monstrer, from Old French monstrer, moustrer, mostrer (etc.), from Latin mōnstrāre, present active infinitive of mōnstrō. The forms montrer, monstrer were influenced by the original Latin word. Compare English muster, Italian mostrare, and Spanish mostrar.
