editFrom Proto-Hmong-Mien *NKʷet (“to have a gap”), borrowed from Middle Chinese 缺 (MC khwet|khjwiet, “to lack”), with irregular phonetic development of the onset "*NKʷet-" > "ɴqʷ-" > "ɴql-" > "nd-" > "nt-".[1]
