From Old Irish olann,[1] from Proto-Celtic *ulanā, a sandhi variant of *wlanā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wĺ̥h₁neh₂ (compare Welsh gwlân, Breton gloan, Cornish gwlan, Gaulish *wlanā (wool)).
