From Ancient Greek ὄμφαξ (ómphax, “unripe fruit, especially grapes”) + -ite.

- (mineralogy) Any of a range of green, monoclinic pyroxene minerals found in eclogites and similar rocks; they are solid solutions of jadeite and diopside.
